Early yesterday, an app claiming to be “Pokemon Yellow” briefly hit Apple’s iTunes store. Don’t get too excited though; the ‘app’ was nothing more than a splash screen which crashed upon pressing start. The App started making waves when it reached the number 3 spot on the ‘Paid Apps’ chart on iTunes, moving to number 2 before being pulled by the Big Apple.
This is interesting for a number of reasons, first of all: it beat out the likes of Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, etc. Secondly, it speaks volumes of not only the potential amount of money that could be made by the Big N, but the people’s desperation to see their childhoods revisited on the iPad and the iPhone.
Everybody but Nintendo themselves seem to know that if Pokemon were to show up on iTunes, it would hit number one within minutes; and this recent stunt goes to prove just that. I understand wanting to keep a tight lid on your properties, but the amount of money to be made should not be ignored; give people a choice between the iStore and the 3DS Shop, problem solved. But meh, what do I know over the likes of tough lawyers and multi-billion dollar corporations… *shrugs*
Regarding the peoples’ apparent desperation: I’m not surprised; Pokemon is a multi-billion dollar property with a broad and varied following spanning multiple demographics. It would be a no-brainer to get something like it on the App Store from Nintendo; and if I may go on a brief tangent: people wouldn’t have to Jailbreak their iDevices to get their Nintendo fix, it would be legitimately available, saving both Apple and the Big N a headache or two.
